Tending is a new digital magazine looking at contemporary life through a psychological lens. It examines how how emotional, relational, cognitive, and unconscious processes shape and are shaped by material and social conditions.

What we are seeking

Tending explores the relationship between our inner lives and the world around us. It aims to inform, illuminate, and stimulate an intellectually curious, culturally literate audience who may have little familiarity with psychological concepts.

The magazine offers a platform for bringing psychological thought into conversation with the wider world. The mental dimensions of war, inequality, technology, housing, history, the arts, and more are often under-appreciated in public discourse. Tending publishes work that contributes to a fuller understanding of the world around us by engaging deeply with psychological ideas.

We welcome contributions from anywhere in the world and from people working both inside and outside academia. Below are examples of the kinds of questions Tending is interested in asking:

  • How does a certain psychoanalytic concept help explain a given social or political phenomenon?
  • How does collective memory of historical violence shape a society's politics?
  • What effect does the psychological life of an urban community have on economic inequality?
  • What are the psychological consequences of particular forms of housing?
  • What can a certain work of art reveal about collective emotional experiences?

Tending does not publish academic articles, mental health advice, purely personal narratives, news reporting, or promotion of specific organisations or interventions.

Form

Written pieces are the norm but we are open to pitches for audio or video forms. Tending has two categories for written pieces: 'Articles', of up to 2,000 words, and 'Blogs', of up to 750 words. Audio and video submissions are flexible.

Style

Tending presents an intellectual yet non-academic tone. Contributors should assume a high level of education in their audience but not necessarily familiarity with psychological concepts or terminology.

Pitches

If you would like to contribute to Tending, please send a pitch to TendingEditorial@protonmail.com and include the word “Pitch” in the subject line. Do not send complete drafts.

The pitch should include the question your submission will seek to answer and why it is of interest. It should also include a description of intended contents, form, and length in a maximum of 300 words, plus a short author biography. Regretfully we are only able to receive pitches for contributions in English at this time.
